Carrageenan is a thickener extracted from red algae and is common in wet canned food. Intestinal inflammation in animal studies is mostly linked to degraded carrageenan, and the safety of food-grade carrageenan is still debated; as a precaution, the EU does not allow it in infant formula. Cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or sensitive stomachs may do better with carrageenan-free products.
