Citric acid is a widely used acidity regulator and preservative aid and is considered safe at typical pet food levels. The ASPCA notes that citric acid and essential oils in citrus plants can cause irritation and central nervous system depression if eaten in large amounts, but that refers to the plants themselves, not the small amounts added to food. Healthy pets don't need to avoid it.
