Dried kelp is a natural iodine source, but its iodine content is high and varies between batches, and large intakes may disrupt thyroid function. Hyperthyroidism is common in middle-aged and senior cats, so cats diagnosed with thyroid disease should avoid extra seaweed supplements; small amounts of kelp in a formulated diet are usually fine for healthy pets.
