Nutmeg contains myristicin. Large amounts can cause hallucinations, disorientation, a fast heart rate, high blood pressure, abdominal pain, and even seizures, lasting up to 48 hours. The small amounts used in recipes are very unlikely to cause serious poisoning, but if a pet gets into the spice jar (roughly 5 grams or more), seek veterinary care right away.
