Pennyroyal oil's main component, pulegone, is a potent liver toxin that the liver converts into compounds that destroy liver cells. Fatal acute liver failure has been reported in dogs after exposure. It is sometimes marketed as a "natural flea repellent" in pet products and should be kept away from cats and dogs entirely.
