The sources of rendered animal fats such as tallow are opaque. In 2018 the euthanasia drug pentobarbital was found in several well-known US canned dog food brands; the manufacturer traced it to beef tallow from a single supplier and withdrew the products. The FDA judged the residue levels unlikely to harm pets, but any amount makes food adulterated. Choose fats with clearly named sources.
