Sodium hexametaphosphate is common in dental treats because it binds calcium in saliva and reduces tartar formation. It is a highly soluble inorganic phosphate; there are no known problems for healthy pets at typical levels, but for cats and dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD), phosphorus from these treats should be counted toward the daily intake.
