Sodium selenite is a common inorganic selenium supplement in pet food. Selenium is an essential trace element, but the gap between requirement and excess is fairly small, and formulation errors or eating supplements can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, and neurological signs. Research shows cats tolerate higher dietary selenium better than dogs; levels in properly formulated complete foods are safe.
