Sodium tripolyphosphate is a common additive for moisture retention and texture. It is a highly soluble inorganic phosphate that is absorbed quickly. Studies found that long-term high inclusion of sodium phosphates with a low calcium-to-phosphorus ratio may affect kidneys even in healthy adult cats, and pets with chronic kidney disease (CKD) should choose low-phosphorus diets. Typical use in complete pet foods is within legal limits.
