Feline diabetes: testing, treatment roles and records
Edited by MaxTeng · Educational content, not reviewed by a veterinarian ·
Signs and a single high glucose reading cannot settle the diagnosis. This guide does not set insulin doses.
Confirm the diagnosis
Stress can raise glucose in cats. A veterinarian considers persistent blood and urine findings with clinical signs. Fructosamine adds an average over a period, not the daily highs and lows.
Individual treatment
Insulin, nutrition and monitoring have important roles. Oral options exist for selected patients in some jurisdictions, with product and patient restrictions. Do not switch treatments or change doses yourself.
Record and ask
Record actual food intake, prescribed medicine times, glucose time/units/method, drinking, urination, weight and unusual events. Mark missing information honestly. Ask for a monitoring and contact plan, including what to do about poor appetite or vomiting.
Urgent changes
Weakness, staggering, seizures, collapse or abnormal breathing require immediate veterinary contact. Do not wait for the next routine log or make dosing decisions from this page.
