MSG and flavour labels: ask for the details
Prepared by TengRip · Sources checked: 2026-10-14
MSG and artificial flavour are not the same ingredient. Restricted diets need full labels, manufacturer information and a veterinary plan.
Other common names: 味精與香料標示:如何問到配方細節, monosodium glutamate, artificial flavor
Names and function
MSG is a specific name; artificial flavour is a use category. Aroma does not prove MSG, and the category does not reveal its chemical components. Preserve the full manufacturer label.
What the label can and cannot show
FDA’s animal-food labeling and ingredient documents describe U.S. naming and use rules. Those rules and the exact formulation are different questions; unspecified flavours do not reveal toxicity, sodium or protein sources.
A practical checking process
Ask about animal/plant sources, ingredient documentation and cross-contact for restricted feeding. Keep the product, flavour, lot and written response; do not reuse one answer for all flavours.
Individual and evidence limits
Kidney, heart or food-sensitivity concerns need a full diet assessment. During diet trials, include treats, flavoured medications and supplements when discussing the plan rather than substituting an appealing food yourself.
