Phosphate labels and kidney diets: compare total phosphorus

Prepared by TengRip · Sources checked: 2026-10-14

Dicalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate and dipotassium phosphate are distinct names. Useful diet comparisons need total phosphorus on a comparable basis.

Other common names: 磷酸鹽與腎病飲食:怎麼比較總磷, dicalcium phosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, dipotassium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate

Names and function

The list identifies a phosphate, not its amount or every phosphorus source. Absence does not prove low phosphorus; presence alone does not prove a diet unsuitable.

What the label can and cannot show

Wet and dry foods contain different water amounts. If both figures are as-fed: dry-matter phosphorus % = as-fed phosphorus % ÷ (100 − moisture %) × 100. The table is arithmetic practice, not intake advice.

A practical checking process

Request typical total phosphorus, moisture and calories for the exact product. Confirm as-fed, dry matter or per 100 kcal, and average versus a guaranteed limit before comparing.

Individual and evidence limits

Bring the full diet, treats and supplements to your vet. Unit conversion cannot set an individual target or replace a kidney-diet plan based on the patient and blood phosphorus.

Example: lower as-fed % may mean higher dry-matter phosphorus

Hypothetical arithmetic, not real products or feeding recommendations
ExampleAs-fed phosphorusMoistureDry-matter phosphorus
Wet A0.3%75%1.2%
Dry B0.9%10%1.0%

A: 0.3 ÷ 25 × 100 = 1.2%; B: 0.9 ÷ 90 × 100 = 1.0%. Match the basis, then consider calories, overall nutrition and the patient.
