Sugar, syrup and molasses: diabetes diets need more than names
Prepared by TengRip · Sources checked: 2026-10-14
Added sugar warrants a diet check, but sugar does not by itself prove disease, and no sugar does not prove diabetic suitability.
Other common names: 糖、糖漿與糖蜜:糖尿病貓不能只看成分名稱, corn syrup, sugar, molasses
Names and function
Sugar, corn syrup and molasses name ingredients, not total carbohydrate, calories or the glucose response to a meal. Removing a name does not create a disease-management diet.
What the label can and cannot show
Cornell describes diabetes assessment using persistent high blood and urine glucose with compatible signs; brief stress elevations are not enough. Eating an ingredient is not diagnostic evidence.
A practical checking process
Prepare exact food and treat names, meal amounts and times, leftovers, weight and appetite changes. If monitoring glucose, record feeding and measurements on the same timeline.
Individual and evidence limits
Coordinate diet changes, medication and feeding with your vet. A sugar-free claim is not a reason to change insulin, and an average fructosamine cannot reveal daily glucose lows.
