Destructive behavior

Has your cat started scratching or chewing furniture?

Edited by MaxTeng · Educational content, not reviewed by a veterinarian ·

Scratching is normal behavior, but chewing or swallowing fabric, string, wires or plants raises separate safety issues. Distinguish scratching, chewing and possible ingestion rather than assuming exploration or mischief.

Possible medical causes

  • Ask a veterinarian to assess suspected non-food ingestion from the item, time and signs; do not assume pica or deficiency.

Possible behavioral causes

  • Scratching helps shed claw sheaths, leave scent and stretch; offer suitable material, orientation and placement.
  • Chewing or sucking fabric does not establish a fiber or care deficit; record ingestion and context for assessment.

Initial at-home suggestions

  • Never use physical punishment or shout — cats can't learn "scratching the sofa is wrong"; they only learn "you appearing = danger"
  • For furniture scratching: observe the preferred material and orientation, and provide a matching scratching post right next to the spot it likes to scratch
  • Secure swallowable fabric, strings and wires; supervise play and put items away afterward.
  • For chewing houseplants: first check whether any plants at home are toxic to cats (lilies are highly toxic to cats)
  • Trimming nails or using nail caps can reduce the severity of scratching damage
