Wheat gluten is a common plant protein source, and some cats and dogs are allergic to wheat, which can cause skin or digestive signs. In the 2007 North American pet food recall, imported wheat gluten (and rice protein concentrate) had been adulterated with melamine to inflate protein test results, causing acute kidney failure in many cats and dogs — the problem was the adulteration, not gluten itself.
